ESIC RECEIVES INTERNATIONAL PRIZE

 


The Epilepsy Support and Information Centre (ESIC) received international recognition of its efforts on behalf of individuals with epilepsy when it was awarded the "Initiative Prize" by the Arab Gulf Funding for United Nations Development Organizations (AGFUND). The prize was awarded by the President of AGFUND, HRH Prince Talal Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud in a ceremony at the United Nations Office in Geneva, Switzerland on November 14, 2001. The Prize consisted of a trophy, a certificate and a grant of $U.S. 40,000. Present to accept this distinguished award was Mrs. Asma Enright, community volunteer and Vice President of the Epilepsy Support and Information Centre.

The Initiative Prize was awarded for the category of Reinforcement of Voluntary Work in the Society and recognizes the achievements of the Epilepsy Awareness Campaign implemented by the Epilepsy Support and Information Centre. This campaign aims at achieving the following objectives:

  • To promote epilepsy health education and support for individuals with epilepsy and their families through public information lectures and conferences, nationwide distribution of educational printed materials about epilepsy and seizure first aid training.

  • To promote community awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding epilepsy through public awareness lectures at hospitals, universities and other institutes and through newspapers and television.

  • To enhance medical care for individuals with epilepsy and strengthen medical response to seizure emergencies through Epilepsy Workshops for Primary Health Care Professionals.

  • To advocate integration of individuals with epilepsy as productive contributing members of the community.

The prize selection is supervised by a Prize Committee, comprised with the President of AGFUND as its chairman and membership of a select number of  distinguished international personalities specializing in the various branches of the prize in whose selection world geographical distribution is taken into consideration.
